Zinc oxide is a mineral filter that sits on top of your skin to physically block UVA and UVB rays, unlike chemical sunscreens which absorb into the skin. It’s gentle, non-irritating, and reef-safe, making it ideal for sensitive skin and ocean-conscious customers.
In the U.S., “sunscreen” is considered an over-the-counter (OTC) drug and is regulated by the FDA. Because we’re a small batch, handmade brand that doesn’t go through FDA drug testing, we can’t legally label or market our product as a “sunscreen”, even though it contains 25% non-nano zinc oxide, the same active ingredient found in many sunscreens.
Definitely. Our UV defense blends smoothly into skin, and the formula includes nourishing ingredients to support your barrier while providing daily mineral protection.
Yes! Our formula is water-resistant, making it great for sweaty hikes, beach days, and surf sessions. But like any zinc-based product, we recommend reapplying after 40–80 minutes of swimming or sweating, and always after towel drying.
Yes, completely! We don’t use any chemical filters like oxybenzone or octinoxate, which have been shown to harm coral reefs. Our zinc oxide is non-nano, so it won’t be absorbed by marine life.
Our balms are made with natural ingredients and no preservatives, but thanks to the stability of zinc oxide, coconut oil, beeswax, and cocoa powder, they typically stay fresh for 12–18 months when stored in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
If the texture or smell changes noticeably, it’s best to replace it.
